Papers, 1862-1881, of Charles William Dustan consisting of military papers including printed general orders and special orders, quartermaster receipts, and communiques. There is also a collection of letters, mainly to Dustan, in which Ala. politics are discussed, especially the 1869 and 1876 elections. The collection contains three series. Series A, Military Papers, 1862-1864, primarily deals with Dustan's activity in Memphis, Tenn; where he was the assistant adjutant general and later the commander of the enrolled militia, 1st Brigade, whose mission was the defense of the city. The papers address routine matters including troop movements, supply needs, costs of enrolling militiamen, and promotions as well as assignments. Troops included were the 55th, 59th, and 61st colored Infantry that made up the 2nd Brigade. Also discussed are railroad employees who were formed into militia organizations. The second series B, Political, primarily contains letters discussing Ala. politicians and politics, elections (1869 and 1876), the black voter, campaign management, patronage, speeches, Demopolis, and Cuba. There is an occasional undated speech apparently written by Dustan, including one he may have given to a black audience. Correspondents include George E. Spencer, M. Wickersham of Mobile, Ala., W.E. Clark of Demopolis, Ala., and James Gillette, the chief supervisor or the 1876 election in Ala. The third and final series C, contains printed material including handbills, campaign tickets, posters, and other campaign emphemera.

Charles William Dustan (1834-1892) of Staten Island, N.Y., was the son of Isaac K. Dustan, captain of the steamer Atlantic . Charles entered the New York state militia in 1854 and served in the 71st New York Militia Regiment in 1861 and as captain in the 53rd New York Infantry Regiment 1861-1862, in Virginia, Mississippi and Tennessee. After the war, Dustan served as an Alabama state legislator, treasury agent, postmaster, and member of the 1867 Constitutional Convention. He was married to Edith...
